Danse Macabre: Variations on “Dies Irae” for Piano solo
Late in 2019 and continuing through the Winter of 2020 James Domine experienced an extraordinary outpouring of piano compositions. One of these is Danse Macabre: Variations on “Dies Irae” The music creates a supernatural musical atmosphere surrounding the medieval chant that intones the Day of Judgment. An introductory apparition of haunted music played by ghostly instruments conjures interpretative impressions that combine to form a surreal aural landscape that follows a kaleidoscopic narrative as the variations unfold. There are currently three versions of the Danse Macabre, one for piano solo, a Duetto for Violin & Guitar, and an arrangement for chamber orchestra.
